Essays about America
Keep in mind that "historical writing" is different from writing in other areas such as literature, social sciences and the natural sciences. An essay outline is a "plan" or "blueprint" for a research paper. It enables the researcher to organize his or her arguments and thoughts. An effective outline can make researching and writing the paper very easy. An essay outline must include: Title, Topic, Main points and support for the same and Summary. All scholarly writing follow this format.
All serious writing is first prepared in drafts. The draft will contain a detailed outline. Write down your thesis and evaluate how it sounds and looks. Is it specific or general? Does the topic address the questions of the instructor? As you prepare the draft, remember to organize your ideas. Write down your arguments and connect them to the relevant evidence.
Introduction – This part of the paper should inform the readers about what the paper is all about and then talk about what it hopes to prove. An introduction offers an overview of the topic. It contains the thesis statement.
You will need to be clear in the introduction and ensure that your readers get a good idea of what is to follow. However, take care that you do not give out too much details. It should be just enough to catch the attention of the reader and encourage him or her to read further. Historical paper writing is based upon a thesis. The latter is an argument or a statement presented by the writer.
Body - An academic essay makes an attempt to address an intellectual question or problem. The first thing is to check if you are writing an essay on the question that you instructor has set for you instead of writing on a random topic.
In order to create a good argument, it is required that you have a strong thesis and good evidence to support it. These two components are interdependent and support each other. It is necessary to provide evidence in support of what you say in order to convince your readers. Again, list of details, quotes and dates would not mean anything without explanation.
An essay is analytical instead of being descriptive. In such essays, it is not enough to just describe what has happened or make a note of past events. It is important to argue a position. Research papers also make an attempt to persuade. After stating a problem or question in the introduction of your essay and after having described your thesis, you will need to convince your audience of the validity of your argument. For this to happen it is essential to argue in a logical and reasonable manner.
Make sure to include only relevant information in your essay. Filling it up with too many facts is confusing and obscures the point you are trying to establish. The best essay is that which takes your reader by the hand and guides him or her through the thought processes of the writer to the conclusions that are logically drawn from the arguments. While presenting your arguments, do not assume that the reader already knows all this.
Paragraphs are the building blocks of a paper. Each paragraph must contain a single idea together with evidence and explanations that support the same. Do not write just 2 or 3 lines in the paragraphs. Each paragraph will have a topic, introductory sentences, facts and evidence and summary.
Be careful of transitions from one topic to another. Alert your reader that you are beginning a new topic. There should be a transition paragraph between the different sections.
As a researcher, your job is to collect the information and present them in a reasonable and systematic manner that supports your central idea. While writing the paper you must make use of footnotes and bibliographies. These are important requirements for papers. The footnote is a way to show how your arguments are rooted in concrete evidence, which can be verified.
Refrain from using long quotes that just fill up the space and make sure the evidence that you choose to give makes a point. The citations will need to be integrated systematically and logically into your argument.
Pay close attention to paragraph order and construction. The points should lead logically from one to another. Instead of putting ideas randomly in the paper, a thoughtful and systematic development is important.
Summary - Your conclusion must summarize your arguments. Keep in mind that conclusion is the last thing your reader will read. This is the final frontier and you would want to create a good impression here. Have strong closing sentences.
While writing, keep in mind to avoid colloquialisms. Do not use obscure or antiquated words, especially if you are not sure of what those mean. Avoid contractions (eg. can't, don't) while writing a formal piece of writing. When you first write about a historical figure, use first and last name. Later on in the essay, use only the last name.
Make sure to check your paper thoroughly for grammar, spelling and typographical and mechanical errors. It is good to have someone read your paper and comment on it.
It is not possible to produce a good paper if you have not done your readings so be sure to read well. Again, you must know that just reading will not guarantee that you would write well. While reading, do not read to just gather information. Read to understand your topic thoroughly.
Critically evaluate what you are reading. It helps to ask questions such as what is the author saying in the book, what are his arguments? What evidence is there to support the same? Questions like these help you get an in-depth knowledge of the subject.
